Where is Tofino?

Tofino is a small town located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in the southwest corner of British Columbia. The Pacific Northwest vibes are strong here with long sandy beaches, moody weather, endless mossy rainforest, and laid back surf town vibes.

Closest cities are Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and Vancouver a short ferry ride away, both with major international airports!

Why Elope in Tofino?

Tofino is world famous for it's incredible surfing, and the town has the laid-back surf vibes to match. The town of Tofino and neighbouring Ucluelet are full of artisan coffee shops, incredible restaurants, and relaxed vibes, and the landscapes range from sandy beaches and rugged coastlines to lush rainforest. This is the ultimate Canadian spot for your PNW elopement!!

5 Incredible Tofino Elopement Locations

There are endless incredible locations to explore in Tofino, Ucluelet, and the Pacific Rim Ecological Reserve, from the mountains to the rainforests to the beaches. Here are 5 of my absolute favourite locations for your Tofino elopement, with a wide variety of landscapes, activities and amenities:

1. Chesterman Beach

Chesterman Beach is a great Tofino elopement location if you’re after something relaxed and low-key. The beach is wide and open, so it’s easy to find a quiet stretch to exchange vows without feeling crowded. You get ocean views, steady waves in the background, and mountains off in the distance — all without needing much setup. It’s simple, natural, and lets the focus stay on the two of you.

2. Rainforest A+B Trails

Rainforest A+B Trails are a solid choice if you want something intimate and surrounded by the incredible green of Vancouver Island's rainforest. The boardwalk loops make it easy to access while still feeling tucked away in old-growth forest. You’re surrounded by massive cedar and hemlock trees, thick moss, and that quiet, coastal rainforest atmosphere. It’s sheltered from wind, works well in light rain, and gives you a calm, private setting without straying far from Tofino.

3. Tonquin Beach Trail

Tonquin Beach Trail has some of the most stunning wooden boardwalks through the rainforest to come out on various secluded beaches and rugged coastal areas. This is a great trail to feel like you're seeing a lot of the different landscapes of Tofino in one area, and the trailhead is right in town! An iconic local spot for your Tofino elopement.

4. Radar Beach

Known to be one of the quieter beaches in the Tofino area, Radar beach is accessible via a 2.2 km out-and-back hike with just over 300 m of elevation. I assure you though, it is well worth the effort! Especially if you are looking for a quieter beach than the popular Chesterman or others near town.

5. Cox Bay Beach

Cox Bay Beach tops the list for more rugged coastal landscapes for your Tofino elopement. Big waves, rocky headlands, and choppy surf make this beach feel wild and dramatic, especially at low tide. It’s close to Tofino but feels adventurous and raw!

Best Time of Year to Get Married in Tofino

In Tofino, the best time to elope really depends on the experience you want! Late spring through early fall (May–September) offers the most reliable weather, longer daylight, and calmer conditions for beach or boat-access ceremonies. July and August are the warmest but definitely the busiest. If you prefer moodier skies, fewer crowds, and a more intimate feel, fall and winter can be beautiful — just plan for wind and rain - it is the PNW after all!

Spring: Fresh greenery, fewer tourists, and softer light.

Summer: Warmest weather and golden sunset ceremonies.

Fall: Dramatic skies, quieter beaches, and cozy coastal atmosphere.

Winter: Storm watching, misty rainforest vibes, and total privacy.

How to Legally Get Married in Tofino

Eloping in Tofino is relatively straightforward, and the legal process is the same as for any wedding in the province — whether it's in front of 100 people or just the two of you. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the legal process of eloping in BC:

1. Apply for a Marriage License

Apply in-person to a marriage license issuer here in BC. Only one of you needs to be present, but needs to bring ID for both of you. This costs $100, and needs to be done within 90 days of your elopement date!

2. Find Your Marriage Commissioner

Your marriage commissioner is the person who will perform your marriage ceremony during your elopement! The base fee starts at $78.75 for this service, though may include additional fees for travel. Here is the list of commissioners in BC! (I'm happy to provide recommendations!!)
