Peyto Lake Elopement in Banff National Park

Peyto Lake is one of the most iconic Banff elopement locations, with stunning viewpoints over the glacier-blue lake surrounding by mountain peaks. Peyto Lake is significantly less busy than some of the other pristine mountain lakes in Banff, like Lake Louise or Moraine Lake, and the short hike to the lake is so worth the views. If you are looking for something even more adventurous, you can combine the short hike at Peyto Lake with some of the other incredible experiences on the Icefields Parkway, like hiking to Bow Glacier Falls or the incredible Cirque Peak from nearby Bow Lake, a guided hike on the Athabasca Glacier, or even crossing the BC border to canoe at the stunning Emerald Lake.

2. Book Your Banff Elopement Photographer

3. The Logistics: Marriage License + Park Permit

The boring part - logistics. It's okay though, I'm here to help guide you through as smoothly as possible so you can get back to the more fun adventure prep! There are 3 steps to follow:

Book Your Marriage Commissioner

This is the person who performs the ceremony for you on your elopement day, and they need to be booked in advance. As your Banff elopement photographer + planner, I can help you find the perfect officiant who gets your vibe and will follow you to the top of a mountain!

Register Your Elopement with Parks Canada + Know their Rules

To elope in Banff National Park, you need to fill out and submit their marriage registration, which you can find here. Other regulations include keeping the event to under 20 people (including yourselves and vendors), and making sure yourselves and everyone attending has a valid park pass! Easy peasy.

Obtain Your Marriage License

The good news: obtaining a marriage license in Alberta is super easy for folks travelling here to get married! You can get married the same day as you apply for the license - there is no wait. Once you obtain the license, you have 90 days (three months) to have your ceremony.

Both of you will need to apply in-person to a registry agent - the two closest to Bow Lake are in the town of Banff and Canmore. Simply bring the license to your ceremony and give it directly to your officiant!

Tour the Athabasca Glacier

The Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia Icefield, more that 10, 000 years old, is one of the most accessible glaciers in North America—and one of the most surreal landscapes you can stand on without mountaineering experience. Massive, ancient ice flows down between dramatic Rocky Mountain peaks, with crevasses, blue meltwater pools, and sweeping alpine views in every direction. What an epic, unique adventure to experience together on your elopement day! There are many different ways to experience the glacier - from guided hiking tours, to ice-ready vehicles that can take you over the glacier to scenic stops.

Hike to Cirque Peak

Cirque Peak is a beautiful Banff hike with sweeping views over Bow Lake and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. It’s adventurous without being overly difficult, making it a great choice for couples who want a meaningful hiking elopement.

The summit feels open and private, with endless peaks and alpine scenery all around you. At sunrise or sunset, the light is especially magical. It’s perfect for couples who want a wedding day that feels intimate, scenic, and a little bit wild.

Canoe on Emerald Lake

Canoeing on Emerald Lake is a peaceful, romantic way to slow down and soak in your elopement day. Surrounded by vibrant turquoise water and towering mountain peaks, it feels intimate and quietly magical. Drifting across the lake together gives you time to connect, laugh, and celebrate just the two of you. It also creates stunning photo opportunities, with reflections of the mountains and forest all around—an unforgettable way to mark the moment.

Enjoy a picnic off the beaten Path

Spend some time at some of the less popular spots in the area like Mosquito Creek, Waterfowl Lakes, or even take the Bow Lake trail out of the main area to find a quiet spot for a calm, peaceful picnic for two.
