Can you legally elope in Banff National Park?
Yes! Couples can legally elope in Banff National Park.
To get legally married in Alberta you will need:
• an Alberta marriage licence
• a registered marriage officiant
• two witnesses
Many couples choose to exchange vows in one of the incredible natural locations throughout Banff National Park, from quiet lakeshores to mountain viewpoints.
As your Banff elopement photographer and co-planner, I help couples navigate the logistics so their elopement day feels relaxed, intentional, and true to who they are.
Where are the best places to elope in Banff?
Banff National Park is filled with incredible locations for intimate elopements.
Some of my favourite locations for a Banff Elopement include:
• Lake Minnewanka
• Bow Lake
• Hermit Meadows
• Peyto Lake
• Heli Elopements
• Kananaskis (outside of Banff and much quieter!)
Each location has different lighting conditions, accessibility, and seasonal considerations, which is why thoughtful location scouting is such an important part of planning a Banff elopement.
How many guests can you bring to a Banff elopement?
The maximum group size for a Banff elopement is 20 people - including you two and your vendors (officiant, photographer, videographer, etc). This helps protect the sensitive habitats of the park.
If you want to include more people, some suggestions include: making a group reservation for dinner after your adventure or gathering together at your airbnb for cake and champagne (or bev of choice)!
Do you help plan Banff elopements?
Yes! As a Banff elopement photographer and co-planner, I help couples design an experience that reflects who they are.
This includes:

• vendor recommendations

• documenting your day on 35mm film and digital photography

Do you need a permit to elope in Banff?
Most elopements in Banff National Park require a special event permit from Parks Canada.
Permit requirements depend on:
• location
• group size
• ceremony setup
• time of year
Many couples planning a Banff elopement choose simple ceremonies with minimal setup, which helps protect the landscape and keeps the experience intimate.
Part of my role is helping couples choose locations that align with park guidelines and assisting with the permit process when needed.
When is the best time to elope in Banff?
Banff is beautiful year-round, and the best time to elope depends on the experience you want!
Spring (April–June): Fewer visitors and dramatic mountain landscapes as the snow melts. Waterfalls are huge. Lakes are still frozen. Mountains are snowcapped.
Summer (July–September)
Warm weather, turquoise lakes, and long alpine evenings. Best time for alpine adventures, canoeing the lakes, and wildflower season (mid-July to mid-August).
Fall (late September–early October)
Golden larch trees and crisp mountain air. The season is short but beautiful, and the light is stunning!
Winter (November–March)
Snow-covered peaks and magical winter landscapes. Skating on frozen lakes, world class skiing, and cozy vibes inside. The key here is to be prepared - winter is no joke in the mountains and it can be reeeeeaaaally cold!!
Note: Sunrise ceremonies are especially popular in Banff because they offer quieter locations and beautiful soft light.
Can we bring our dog to our Banff elopement?
Oh I insist!!!! Dogs are allowed in many areas of Banff National Park as long as they remain on leash.
Many couples include their dog in their ceremony or portraits, especially at lakes and trails that allow pets.
If you're planning to bring your dog to your Banff elopement, it's helpful to bring a friend or family member who can hold the leash during parts of the day.
How far in advance should we book a Banff elopement photographer?
Most couples book their Banff elopement 6–12 months in advance, especially for peak summer and fall dates.
However, elopements can also come together quickly. If you're planning a last-minute Banff elopement, it's always worth reaching out to check availability.
