What an Elopement in Squamish Can Feel Like
There’s no single version of a Squamish elopement—and that’s kind of the point.

- hike up somewhere like the Chief, read your vows, head back down for tacos
- paddle out somewhere quiet, say your vows on the shoreline
- take a helicopter into the backcountry and keep things simple once you land
- a slow morning with coffee followed by exploring the amazing local waterfalls

Best Places to Elope in Squamish
One of the most beautiful things about Squamish is the variety of landscapes within a short distance.
You’ll find:

1. STawamus Chief
Trail length: 4-7 km roundtrip, depending on the peak
Elevation gain: 650 m
If you want an elopement location that feels distinctly Squamish, the Stawamus Chief is hard to ignore.
It’s right there above town—big granite, big views, and just enough effort to make it feel earned. You can hike up before sunrise, take your time getting to the top, and read your vows with Howe Sound stretched out below you. Or keep it simpler and stay lower down where you still get that scale without committing to the full climb.
It’s not a quiet, tucked-away spot—it’s exposed, a bit busy, and very real. Which is part of the appeal.
Early mornings make the biggest difference here. Less people, cooler air, and space to actually take it in before the trail fills up.

2. Squamish Estuary
The estuary is one of the most flexible places to include in a Squamish elopement day. Flat walking trails make it easy to move through, and the route naturally opens up between ocean, river, and mountain views. You can start here, end here, or just pass through as part of a bigger day. It works well if you want something low-effort physically but still outdoors, with enough space to walk, talk, and stop wherever it makes sense. Sunrise and sunset both work here depending on how you’re structuring your timeline.

3. Shannon Falls
Shannon Falls is one of those places you can fold into an elopement day almost without trying. You step out of the car and you’re immediately in it—the sound hits first, then the spray in the air, then the scale of the rock wall once you look up. Everything feels close and vertical, like the landscape is happening right around you instead of in the distance.
Most couples don’t stay in one spot for long here. You walk in, take it in, spend some time moving around the base of it, and then keep going with the rest of your day—whether that’s a hike, heading toward the ocean, or finding somewhere to sit and eat after. It works well as part of a bigger elopement route because it adds a completely different kind of environment without needing a long hike or a big commitment. It’s a quick shift into something raw and physical before moving on to whatever comes next.

4. Garibaldi Lake
Trail length: 19.2 km round trip
Elevation gain: 981 m
Garibaldi Lake is one of the most breathtaking elopement locations near Squamish, perfect for couples who want a true alpine elopement experience. The hike in is a commitment, but it’s part of what makes the day feel so intentional and memorable. When you arrive, you’re greeted by vibrant turquoise water, snow-capped peaks, and wide-open mountain views that feel almost unreal. There are plenty of scenic spots along the shoreline where you can find a quiet place to exchange vows, especially if you go at sunrise or stay overnight. It’s ideal for couples who love adventure and don’t mind putting in the effort for an incredible payoff. The whole experience—from the hike to the ceremony—feels like a shared journey, making it not just beautiful, but deeply meaningful.

5. WAtersprite Lake
Trail length: 17.2 km
Elevation Gain: 732 m
Watersprite Lake is a stunning alpine elopement spot in Squamish that feels remote, peaceful, and incredibly rewarding. Getting there involves a rough forest service road and a moderate hike, but that effort keeps the crowds away and makes the experience feel more intimate. When you arrive, you’re surrounded by jagged peaks reflected in a crystal-clear lake, often with lingering snow adding to the dramatic scenery. There’s a cozy backcountry hut nearby and plenty of shoreline space to find a quiet ceremony spot. It’s especially magical at sunrise or sunset, when the light hits the mountains just right. Perfect for couples who want a true adventure elopement that feels wild, personal, and completely removed from the busy world.
When to Elope in Squamish
Each season brings a completely different energy:
Spring (April–June)
Waterfalls are at their strongest, everything feels fresh and alive. Expect rain and moody skies.
Summer (July–September)
Long days, warmer weather, and the most accessibility. Also the busiest time.
Fall (October–November)
Quiet, atmospheric, and deeply romantic. Mist, fog, and fewer people.
Winter (December–March)
Snow in the mountains, quieter forests, and a slower pace overall.
There’s no “best” time—only what feels most aligned with you.
Legal Requirements for Eloping in Squamish
While this is definitely the least interesting part of the process, getting legally married in British Columbia is actually super easy!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A BC marriage license ($100 CAD)
- Two witnesses
- A licensed officiant
You must apply for your marriage license in person (only one of you needs to be there), and it’s valid for 90 days. Bring the license along to your ceremony, and hand it over directly to your officiant!
